Problem:
With an expansive footprint, this new custom built home in Murfreesboro needed a
strategy to maintain a healthy crawl space. At roughly 4,500 sq. ft. and a height of about 4-feet,
there was approximately 18,000 cubic feet of crawl space air that needed to be filtered and
maintained at a near constant humidity level. Although our commercial-grade dehumidifiers are
designed to manage that amount of air at the top end of performance, another challenge is the
movement and filtration of crawl space air. The homeowners, along with their builder, agreed
that two units would best serve the space and help move conditioned air throughout. We also
consulted with the builder to add conditioned supply air from the HVAC system.
Solution:
Along with upgrades in dehumidification, we were contracted to install a heavy-duty
vapor barrier that would resist damage and punctures, as additional contractors would be
working in the space after we completed our upgrades to the crawl space. In order to provide
maximum moisture protection and energy efficiency, closed-cell spray foam insulation was
applied to all exterior facing foundation walls. No other insulation provides the air sealing
benefits of closed-cell polyurethane foam, helping extend the life of HVAC and dehumidification
equipment.
